<itunes:summary>We start this episode off talking about Dr. Rob and Charlie's recent achievements at the gym and how strategically incorporating carbs into your diet can help improve your results in the gym. Dr. Rob talks about the different hormones that are effected when consuming carbs and how they effect your muscles.

In our main topic we talk sugar is toxic, based on an episode of 60 minuets Dr. Rob recently saw featuring Dr.Robert Lustig and Dr. Sanjay Gupta in which they both talk about how sugar can be and is toxic to the human body. We talk about how people a hundred years ago consumed but a fraction of the sugar the average person consumes today and relate that to all the health issues related to modern day society and the modern day diet.

We also talk about a book written by Timothy Ferris called the Four Hour Body based on an interview Charlie saw online. In his book he discusses many of the same things that we have talked about in our podcasts as well as gives some great tips to help you lose weight and/or increase your bodies performance in a short amount of time.

In this episode of the Dr. Rob Show...

Discuss how implementing carbs into your diet can improve your performance at the gym.
Discuss which hormones are effected by carb intake and what effect they have on your muscles.
Discuss how sugar is bad for you and why.

What do you think?

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Dr. Rob Show we discuss the issues related to getting older based off and e-mail we received from a listener.

We talk about how society has taught us that when we get older our bodies degrade and there is nothing we can do about it, we just have to accept it. In the e-mail we received from our listener, she asks us if that is really true or if there is something we can do to keep our bodies healthy and moving no matter what your age. The simple answer to that question is no, you don't have to just accept it. There are plenty of ways to keep your body healthy and strong even through the latter years of life.

Dr. Rob gives some excellent tips on not only how to navigate properly through our daily lives, but he also gives some great exercising tips, especially for those with knee problems.

In this episode of the Dr. Rob Show....

	Discuss the issues with aging
Discuss things you can do to help overcome injuries
	Discuss exercise tips

We talk about the differences on our new website and the Dr. Rob website. Our new website focuses on supplying not only information, but products and services as well. It is more of an online clinic rather than a website solely for our podcast. Over the last 2 years we have received hundreds of e-mails with questions ranging from commonly asked questions to people interested in becoming patients. We now have a website that will help us give the best possible service to our patients/clients.

<itunes:summary>In this episode we discuss a special phone call Dr. Rob received in the last week which guides us into our main topic of the day. Today we talk about the hormone Leptin, which is a hormone that is released from your body fat and communicates with your brain to let it know that you have enough body fat so you can stop eating (i.e. shuts off your appetite).

Dr. Rob explains, the more fat someone has, the higher the level of Leptin that is being released. Your brain becomes resistant to the increased level of Leptin and eventually your brain stops receiving the “stop eating” signal all together. We answer some commonly asked questions and we also talk about different ways to address Leptin related issues.

What Do you Think?

Have you ever had your Leptin levels checked? If you are overweight, and have been struggling to lose it you should ask your doctor to check your Leptin level.

<itunes:summary>Get your thinking caps on for this one folks, we have some brain exercises for our regular listeners!
In this episode of the Dr. Rob Show, we talk about Charlie’s recent illness and Dr. Rob explains how the fall and winter months is a prime time for people to get sick. He also gives some quick tips on what to expect this time of year and some possible causes for your typical fall and winter illness.
In our main topic we discuss the A.N.D.I. scale by Whole Foods and how, even though it consists of good wholesome foods, it mainly caters to the vegetarian/vegan audience. Dr. Rob explains how animal protein is not bad for you and could actually help you in your weight loss goals, as well as the misconceptions that society has placed on animal protein.
We also go back into the Micro and Macro nutrient discussion. Which foods contain what and what’s better for you? Dr. Rob also makes some comparisons of specific foods and also talks about how different cultures that have more of a whole food based diet seem to have less disease and obesity than your standard “American” type diet.

In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show…

	Discuss the A.N.D.I. scale
	Discuss micro and macro nutrients
Discuss the difference between certain cultures and their foods

What Do You Think?

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Dr. Rob show, we revisit the plateau effect discussion. We chose to dive deeper into this topic because of a recent episode of the Biggest Loser in which all the contestants on the show barely lost any weight and one even gained 5lbs, even though they maintained their diet and continued to work out vigorously. Dr. Rob explains how counting calories ultimately turns your body against you. By counting and restricting calories your body goes into “starvation mode”, which will ultimately lead to fat storage and re-bound weight gain. We also talk about the different hormones that are effected by restricting calories and the negative effects that happen to your body by doing so. No matter what you do, your body will eventually plateau at some point and Dr. Rob gives some tips on how to power through that time. He explains what to do and what not to do when you hit your plateau point.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we briefly discuss the 4th episode of The Biggest Loser, which recently had only a brief 2 minute nutrition segment hosted by one of the past contestants. We mention the fact that even though nutrition is critically important in weight loss success, the TV show tends to focus more on the fitness and exercise aspect of weight loss, which we feel is sending the wrong message to people. Dr. Rob also mentions an article he recently came across that highlights Nighttime Eating Syndrome (NES), which is characterized by no morning appetite, evening and nighttime eating and insomnia. Dr. Rob doesn't agree with this being classified as a legitimate syndrome. Dr. Rob also answers a question from a listener regarding optimal endurance nutrition. For many endurance athletes still follow the concept of carbo-loading to prepare an event; however, Dr. Rob explains why this approach is not very efficient.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we discuss the recent passing of Steve Jobs and his contributions to the world through his work at Apple and Pixar. Dr. Rob also talks about his experience of working with executives from both Disney and Pixar when he was practicing in Los Angeles. Dr. Rob was the director of a blood type diet based program, which was effective for weight loss, but also produced excellent results for a wide variety of other inflammatory based conditions and diseases. The blood type diet approach was popularized by Dr. Peter D'Adamo and his best selling book, Eat Right For Your Type. Using blood type is a simple way to determine an immunologically friendly, or an anti-inflammatory diet for an individual. The majority of the population falls into two categories. Approximately 35- 40% are A+ blood type and about 35-40% of the population are O+ blood type. People with the A+ blood type tend to eat more of a plant based diet, whereas people with the O+ blood type tend to eat more of an animal protein based diet. Interestingly, neither type tolerates wheat or dairy products very well. This means that 80% of the population should not consume wheat and dairy products on a regular basis. Many people, even without knowing their blood type tend to consume a diet consistent with the characteristics of their actual blood type. People who are A+, tend not like much animal protein and are commonly vegetarian or vegans. People who are O+ like protein and do very well with protein. The blood type approach makes the argument that their is not a "perfect" diet for everyone.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show we discuss sugar cravings. This discussion is a continuation of our last episode, which we talked about circadian rhythm and how artificial light affects our hormones, which ultimately affects our weight and health. The artificial light environment we live in today can also cause us to crave sugar. To put it simply, if you are not sleeping, then your brain wants food. More specifically, your brain wants sugar, which is obviously the default energy choice for the brain. Also, Dr. Rob discusses a recent article, which suggests that sugar cravings for children might be biological. Of course, sugar cravings are biological. We are all hardwired for carbohydrates. Our sugar cravings and overall appetite is a feed forward system, which means the more sugar or "carbs" you eat, the more you want. This can become a slippery slope for someone trying to lose weight, or dealing with a health condition like Diabetes.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show we discuss a recent article criticizing the reality weight loss TV show, The Biggest Loser. It is hard to deny the popularity of the show, but many weight loss experts are criticizing the approach the contestants of the show undertake. The dramatic weight loss results on a weekly basis, certainly makes for good television; however, significantly reducing calories and the intense exercise is not the best approach for long-term weight loss success. This same, "eat less and exercise more," outdated approach has been shown time and time again to produce short term results, but ultimately leading to long-term failure. So are contestants of The Biggest Loser being set up for failure? Who's fault is it if some of the contestants re-gain the weight? Certainly, the initial reaction would be to blame or point the finger at the contestants. Of course, there is a certainly level of personal responsibility for making the necessary diet and lifestyle changes long-term, but in reality it is not the contestants fault for re-gaining the the weight. It is the approach. America loves to see the contestants transformations, which is amazing to watch and very inspiring, but the show is sending people the wrong message when it comes to successful weight loss. In It is fundamental to understand that weight gain and obesity is not a calorie and lack of exercise problem, it is a hormonal problem.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show we discuss the recent launch of Dr. Rob’s eBook titled The Perfect Weight Loss Solution and describe each of the 3 phases of this weight loss system. We also discuss the best exercise for burning fat, and talk about a recent hiking adventure to describe the ideal form of exercise. In the past, the concept of the “fat burning zone,” which is long duration, low intensity aerobic, or “cardio” based exercise, such as jogging is not effective for burning fat and can actually have a detrimental impact on the body. A recent study conducted in Taiwan found that people who engaged in as little as 15 minutes of moderate to intense exercise daily, reduced their risk of death by 14% and added 3 years to their lifespan. In regards to effectively burning fat, the same holds true. Exercising with more intensity and shorter duration is the ideal way to burn fat. Dr. Rob mentions some colleagues of his who have a company called Metabolic Effect, and they promote “rest-based training,’ which is based on high intensity and short duration exercise. Short duration, high intensity exercise is a better strategy to encourage the body to effectively burn fat. Dr. Maki also mentions another practitioner, Dr. Al Sears and discusses his new book titled PACE, which aligns with this approach to fitness.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show we discuss the difficult topic of cancer. We discuss how the type, quality and the amount of certain foods can contribute to the development of certain cancers. We talk about T. Colin Campbell and The China Study, which was an important study that concluded eating higher amounts of animal protein and fat increased the risk of developing certain cancers. In the study, this difference was seen between the rural and urban populations in China. The rural population tended to eat more vegetables and less animal protein, and therefore had a lower incidence of cancer. Whereas the urban population consumed more animal protein and less vegetables and had a higher incidence of cancer. In Dr. Rob's opinion, there is probably some other variable in the urban population that was not accounted for such as the consumption of sugar, refined carbohydrates or alcohol. Researchers have been trying to blame heart disease and cancer on the consumption of protein and fat for 50 years. As a country, Americans are consuming less fat on a daily basis, but the incidence of cancer is increasing. The more likely culprit is the ever increasing consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates in our society.

<itunes:summary>Have any of your friends or family members tired to sabotage your weight loss efforts? In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show we discuss a recent study that suggests having overweight friends can increase your risk of gaining weight. The study attributed the increased risk of weight gain to eating more food and exercising less, but that explanation seems a bit too simple. There certainly has be some deeper psychological forces that influence people within a particular social group. Is it due a need for conformity? Is the influence by friends and family intentional, or is it again, more of an unconscious reaction based personal insecurities? Unfortunately, many of us have been victims of weight loss sabotage by friends or family. Losing weight is hard enough, you certainly do not need any negative influence from your loved ones. The proper support is essential to your weight loss success. We give tips on how to over come weight loss sabotage.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Dr. Rob Show we discuss the popular topic of Probiotics and how they may have a positive impact on your weight loss goals. In the human body, we have approximately 100 trillion bacterial organisms in the colon, which have a major impact on overall healthy and wellness. Of the trillions of organisms in the colon, there are roughly 400 different species of bacteria. When this balance of bacteria is upset due to factors such as anti-biotic use and stress, it is called Dysbiosis and can contribute to many health conditions. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can be taken orally as a supplement to re-establish the proper balance of bacteria in the colon. Probiotic supplements have long been used for many digestive complaints and conditions, but to use specifically as a weight loss supplement is a fairly new concept. Recent research done at Stanford University found that gastric bypass surgery patients who were given Probiotics lost more weight then the control group. This is an interesting finding that certainly needs more investigation, but gives more evidence that weight and obesity is more complex then just eating less calories and exercising more.

In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show…

Discuss the popular topic of probiotics for weight loss
Discuss the fact that there is roughly 100 trillion bacterial organisms in the human colon
Discuss recent research from Stanford University that used Probiotics with gastric bypass patients
There are 3 proposed mechanisms how gut bacteria can contribute to weight gain

	Gut bacteria consume calories
	Gut bacteria promote fat deposition
	Gut bacteria increase systemic inflammation

Dr. Maki's favorite probiotic company is Klaire Labs

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Dr. Rob show we discuss the drastic change Weight Watchers has recently made to their point system. For years, Weight Watcher's followed the philosophy that all calories are created equal, but now has changed their stance based on current research. The new point system gives more priority to whole foods, such as lean sources of protein , vegetables and some fruits. In addition, the new point system deemphasizes the consumption of refined and processed foods becasue of the distorted caloric density. Eventhough the point system is still an intentional caloric restriction based program, Dr. Rob voices his opinion on the postive change made by the weight loss company.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we discuss how Dr. Rob got started helping people to lose weight and his transition away from using a ketogenic program initially to his current approach. Most weight loss programs focus on intentional caloric restriction, which produce short-term results. However, by focusing only on calories, the results achieved on most "diets" and programs are not sustainable long-term. The "restriction" based approach to weight loss is certainly outdated. Both health care practitioners and even the general public desperately needs to change their mindset. Instead of focusing on "restriction" as the key to weight loss, we need to realize that food is actually "information" to the body that communicates with several hormones and ultimately DNA. It is more complicated then just reducing calories. In fact, obesity in a sense is a form of starvation. Not for macronutrients (carbs, fats and protein), but starvation of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients).

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we discuss the growing epidemic of thyroid issues in America. The current estimates claim that approximately 12 million people or 6% of the US population have some type of thyroid condition, with hypothyroid diseases being the most common. Unfortunately, with the stressful and toxic 21st century, there are probably millions more that have been undiagnosed. This is partially due to lack of awareness and poor screening tests. Hypothyroid issues are predominately a female related condition and the most common cause is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s Disease. Some of the common hypothyroid symptoms include fatigue, constipation, weight gain and hair loss.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we discuss the validity and long-term efficacy of the HCG Diet. This new diet craze was introduced to the marketplace a few years ago by Kevin Trudeau in his book, "The Weight Loss Cure They Don't Want You to Know About." Trudeau’s book contained a protocol of Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, which involves a 500 calorie per day diet and daily injections of HCG. The very low calorie diet (VLCD) causes the body to go into a state of ketosis, which is when the body burns ketone bodies instead of glucose as a fuel source. The state of ketosis, along with the administration of the HCG hormone produces rapid weight loss in a relatively short period of time. Download the MP3

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we discuss the importance of staying well hydrated and how critical it is for weight loss and overall health. Our bodies are made up of approximately 70% water, so we need to consume water consistently throughout the day to maintain a proper level of hydration. However, with all of the choices available on the market today, we have a tendency not drink enough water throughout the day. Also, many commercial beverages contain caffeine, sugar or sodium, which can compound the problem and have a negative impact on the body overtime as well. A recent study found people who consistently drank water before meals, lost more weight than people who did not consume water as consistently overtime. This study provides more evidence to support the benefits of drinking adequate water on a daily basis. In addition, we also discuss another study conducted in Japan linking insulin resistance with Alzheimer’s disease.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show, we discuss the role of inflammation in weight gain. In our society, one of the major sources of “inflammation” is our daily diet. The digestive tract, mouth to anus is nothing more than an extension of the immune system, which serves as a protective barrier against potential hazards. Every time we eat, are immune system is stimulated. Many of us consume allergenic foods on a consistent basis, which can increase the inflammatory potential in the body. Overtime, this constant exposure to allergic foods can eventually lead to a range of symptoms such as allergies, digestive issues, joint pain and weight gain.

Discuss the most common food sensitives
